Daniel Island

A master-planned community located in the southern part of Berkeley County, Daniel Island is bounded by the Cooper River to the west and Wando River to the east. Originally used for farming and cattle ranching, the island was named after Robert Daniell, who was the governor of the British Province of South Carolina from 1716-17. Development started during the 1990s, with great care being taken to preserve the natural environment in the form of many parks and green spaces.

The concept of Daniel Island’s master plan integrates these green spaces with the communities, resulting in each neighborhood having its own park. Because of its responsible planning and design, Daniel Island has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including an Award of Excellence from the Urban Land Institute, and has been cited as one of the Best Master Planned Communities in America.

Real estate

Daniel Island is divided into eight neighborhoods, with each one named after the park found within it:

  • Barfield Park
  • Center Park
  • Cochran Park
  • Codner’s Ferry Park
  • Daniel Island Park
  • Etiwan Park
  • Pierce Park
  • Smythe Park

They offer real estate options that include single-family residences, townhouses, and condominiums all neatly laid out on gently curving landscaped and sidewalk-lined streets. Very few straight out cul-de-sacs are present; instead, there are numerous looping streets with green islands in the center portion.

The homes in Daniel Island incorporate a variety of architectural styles, most notably the Southern Lowcountry style. This is characterized by a raised first floor and broad hipped roofs that extend over large covered front porches accented by columns. Other details include dormer windows with shutters, and garages that are located at the rear end to turn attention away from cars and highlight the streetscape instead.

Lovely, scenic views of the trees, wetlands, river, and surrounding areas can be glimpsed from the homes. Residents in each neighborhood also enjoy amenities such as swimming pools, picnic areas, children’s playgrounds, tennis courts, open air pavilions, gazebos, and miles of walking trails that interweave throughout the communities.

Daniel Island’s location and excellent integration of open spaces with living spaces has made its homes highly sought-after properties among many homebuyers.
